Snow in April — How Are the Bees?

A late spring snowfall and -20°C overnight temperatures had us checking on our girls. Here is what we found.

We sadly had snow again. Something that is always hard on the bees — and it came with low temperatures too. We had -20°C overnight, which is tough even for well-established colonies this late in the season.

As a beekeeper you find yourself asking: how are my girls doing in there? But they were still buzzing in their boxes — good thing we put enough feed on the day before.

The yard after the storm

Lucky for us the April sun is supposed to come back out and give us a warm weekend. I'll be back to report on the bee flight then. Spring in Manitoba keeps you humble, but the bees are tougher than they look.
