First Pollen of the Season

After the snow and cold, the bees are finally out searching for flowers — the first signs of spring in the Swan River Valley.

By Eckhard Rinsdorf

We had a crazy flight day again. After the snow and cold the bees sure enjoyed it. These times they are looking all over for flowers until they find them — and that sounds almost impossible, but it isn't. The warm weather before in March had trees budding, and the bees had been waiting for exactly this moment.

Here are the bees working an Elder bush, collecting pollen from the male flowers. I hope they will find lots there, and then they stay busy and out of peoples' yards!

It's always a relief to see the first strong flights of spring. After a long Manitoba winter, watching the hives come alive again is one of the best parts of beekeeping.
